SOURCING NEW MIGHTY LEAF TEAS FROM DARJEELING
In the fall of 2007, Gary and Jill traveled to the Darjeeling region of Northeast India to source new teas for Mighty Leaf from the Okayti tea estate. Often called the "Champagne of Teas," the finest and highly sought after Darjeeling teas hail from this mountainous region nestled near the Himalayas. The tea's flavor varies with the seasons or harvest periods. Farmers harvest Darjeeling four times a year during what are called the First flush, Second flush, Rains flush and Autumn flush.
Located in the mystical Mirik Valley, the Okayti tea estate grows some of the most flavorful and fresh Darjeelings in the world – its lush gardens spread out over undulating terrain rising from 4000 to 6500 feet. Waterfalls and pine trees dot the hillsides complementing the natural beauty of the Himalayas rising up behind the valley.
Built in the late 1800s, the tea estate was originally called Rangdoo, but the tea produced became so popular among British aristocrats, that connoisseurs began calling it the “The Only Okay Tea” and eventually the name Okayti was coined. Supervising tea production for over three decades the Kumbhat family has ensured that the estate yields the highest quality Darjeelings. Mighty Leaf is happy to offer two unique Autumn Flush Darjeeling from the Okayti estate, Darjeeling Autumn Flush and Darjeeling Autumn Flush Oolong. We hope you enjoy them.
